Psalms 119:7

Actions speak so much louder than words.

It’s always nice to hear the words “I love you” but it’s even sweeter when that love is shown through actions.

The psalmist is proclaiming a promise here.   WHEN this happens THEN I will…he is acknowledging that change will occur with understanding and knowledge of God’s laws.

The psalmist knows of God’s laws enough to put it in this psalm, but he understands that just knowing of them or reading them once or twice doesn’t equate to “learning” them fully.

All through scripture there are many references to meditating on God’s law, and there’s  a reason for that.  Each time I read a verse or chapter, God reveals just a little bit more depth of meaning, layers upon layers. Each new insight changes me just a little bit more.

Thankfulness and gratitude for God’s love and mercy and patience with me just naturally follow.

It’s a natural progression. One we see everyday with our own children (hopefully).  We hope our kids will learn our rules and then thank us by obeying and ultimately living good lives.   That’s the goal right?  Not much different than us with our Heavenly Father.

As I learn your righteous regulations, I will thank you by living as I should!

Matthew 5:17-18 and 7:12

Matthew 5:17-18

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Matthew 7:12

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

You know when you’re reading through the Bible how certain phrases just stick in your mind?

Well, that is what happened with me here.  Last night I was reading in Matthew 5 and read through verse 17.  I remember thinking which Law, which Prophets?  It would be so nice if Jesus would have given us a bulleted list for everything He taught…oh wait!  That is exactly what He gave us here…read on.

Jesus didn’t specify whether He was referring to ‘just’ the 10 commandments or whether He is referring to the ‘entire’ Law as set forth by God vs. the ‘entire’ Law set forth by the Pharisees.

I have read through the first 5 books of the Bible and there are a LOT of Laws and rules and guidelines and all that jazz.  It makes a persons head spin.

So I remember thinking as I was reading Matthew 5:17 that the verse says Jesus didn’t come to abolish the Law…abolish = do away with, destroy completely, put an end to, annul.  So the Law isn’t going anywhere in Jesus’ mind.

He said He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets.  If something is fulfilled = to come into actuality; effect or make real, to meet a requirement or condition, to satisfy.

Jesus didn’t come to take away the Law and the Prophets, He came to satisfy, to fulfill the Law and the Prophets.

Through Jesus, the Law will be satisfied.  Through Jesus, the Prophets (prophecies) will be fulfilled.

But not yet.

Amazing.

Then, today I was reading further in Matthew into Chapter 7 verse 12.

Matthew 7:12

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Jesus is telling us that He will satisfy/fulfill the Law and the Prophets.  But because He didn’t abolish the Law and the Prophets, are we are to honor the Law and the Prophets as well?

Do we keep the Law as Christians?  Do we not?

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Jesus never turned His back on the Law and the Prophets and until the last prophecy from the Prophets is observed, and until the Heaven and the Earth disappear, Jesus has instructed us on how to observe the Law and the Prophets…

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Oh wait!  I said Jesus gave us a bulleted list here didn’t I?

  • So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Thank you Lord!
