Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
The believer who digs into the Word daily – grows.
The believer who reads Christian fiction for entertainment – reinforces their beliefs.
The believer who listens to Christian music – praises God.
The believer who watches Christian movies or television – guards their hearts.
The believer who researches Christian news online – witnesses the bad but focuses on the good being done for the Kingdom.
There is a point here…somewhere. It’s difficult to live in this world and not be “of” this world. It’s difficult to keep that shield up and not become jaded by all we see and hear around us. Fortunately for us, we aren’t having to hold the shield in place ourselves.
Small actions and decisions we make everyday help guard us, but our strength comes from the Lord.
Make the decision to read your Bible everyday. Get on a reading plan to read your entire Bible in 1 year or something. Read something…everyday…and ENJOY it! The Bible is action packed and covers the gamut of emotions.
Make the decision to turn off the TV the second you realize the show you are watching contains meaningless violence, foul language, sexually explicit scenes, or pure evil. There are shows out there where the violence and such is not meaningless. It actually serves a purpose to illustrate the story line and the story line conveys something good. Be careful though. We all make fun of “Leave it to Beaver” land but if more television shows were like “Leave it to Beaver” and “Little House on the Prairie” I bet we’d have less violence in our world.
Make the decision to turn the radio station to a Christian station. It’s positive music/lyrics that reinforce your beliefs and praise God all at the same time. Sing a new song to the Lord! Refuse to listen to the songs with lyrics that promote sex or violence or use foul language.
The point is.. our world is violent and evil enough. You can’t “unwatch” something once you’ve seen it. You can’t “unhear” something. Once you watch it, read it, speak it….it’s a part of you now. Be careful what you take in.
The Christian that reads nothing but Fantasy/Witchcraft/Paranormal books for entertainment, is a Christian that will stray later on. They are way “cool” and promote mostly power within the self. There is no room for an all powerful God when the person wants all the power for themselves.
The same goes for believers who watch nothing but violence and anger and evil and sex on TV or movies. These are believers that will stray eventually.
We don’t have to bury our heads in the sand when it comes to the reality of this world. But our focus needs to remain on God and the good saints are doing around the world for the Kingdom. We need to see the reality of the evil in this world in order to recognize it and work to overcome it. There is enough real evil in this world that to add in “entertainment” evil on top of that…it’s overwhelming to the soul.
